Improv 96

This series of videos is about improvisation — playing without any preparation, not knowing where it starts and where it will end. This means when I sit down at the piano I don’t know what my left or right hand are going to do; the chords, melodies, rhythms and structure are yet to evolve. Of course, it is not complete chaos, as I give my best to implement what I know about these components of music, how they “work.” Just in the same way you speak to somebody without having to prepare a speech beforehand, because you know how language works and use its components (grammar, syntax, etc.) in order to get across your thoughts and feelings. You could call it “live composing” or composing “on the fly” — there is no time to improve the result, the moment it’s played, it is the way it is. Under these conditions it would, of course, be an unsurmountable challenge to try to achieve the perfection, sophistication and the sense of wholeness of a “usual” composition.
