Bert Ruiter, former bassist of Focus and Earth & Fire, passed away yesterday, March 24, 2022. The musician, composer and producer, who was together with Jerney Kaagman for almost fifty years, was 75 years old. As part of Focus, Ruiter experienced foreign success in the 1970s with the song Sylvia. He remained associated with the band until it fell apart in 1978. Ruiter then switched to Earth & Fire, the group with which Kaagman had already achieved various successes. With Ruiter in the ranks, the band scored the number 1 hit Weekend. With this Earth & Fire hit we commemorate this extremely amiable man. . Bert Ruiter. Christina Henriette (Jerney) Kaagman (The Hague, July 9, 1947) is a Dutch singer, who became known in the band Earth & Fire. She was also chairman of Stichting Conamus (later called Buma Cultuur Foundation) and BV Pop, as well as jury member of the television program Idols. Earth & Fire (also Earth and Fire) was a Dutch pop group from the seventies and eighties of the 20th century. The members came from Voorschoten, Voorburg and Leidschendam. The main band members were Jerney Kaagman (vocals) and twin brothers Gerard (keyboards) and Chris Koerts (guitar). The other band members changed over time. Drummer on the first two hits is Cees Kalis, who then chose a job in education and was replaced by Ton van der Kleij. Bass guitarist Hans Ziech was replaced in 1974 by Theo Hurts, who was succeeded in 1978 by Bert Ruiter.
