Build an Exotic Mini Indoor Pond with Misty Waterfall DIY
I used a black FRP tub (FRP Lily pond 18“ diameter) for this project which I had bought from The Green Tag, a local garden store. It holds approximately 20 litres of water.
The idea is to build a mini indoor pond with plants and a misty waterfall.
I proceeded to cut pieces of foam board to build a vault for the submersible pump. I used black silicone sealant for the job. A window was also cut out on the front and covered with window screen mesh to allow water into the vault. Making a separate compartment or vault for the pump is important to keep the pump free of debris and make maintenance easy. Next I created a hardscape by joining driftwood and Seiryu rocks with filter floss and superglue. This technique works great by providing larger surface area for bonding while joining uneven surfaces. This hardscape will sit freely on the rim of the tub and can be removed easily in case needed during maintenance. I placed the pump in the vault and ran a quick water test. It all worked fine and I was happy with the waterfall too.
Next I laid down a layer of aquasoil in the tub and capped with with river sand. Aquasoil has all essential nutrients that plants need to grow.
I created a minimal underwater hardscape with Seiryu stones in the centre of the tub below the waterfall area. This will soften the landing of the waterfall. I also added some texture around the rocks with ADA gravel.
I proceeded with planting aquatic plants starting with Myriophyllum aquaticum (Parrots feather), a Microsorum pteropus (aquatic Staghorn Fern), Camomba caroliniana and Hydrocotyle tripartita. Next I placed some common terrestrial plants (which grow very well in water) in between the network of the driftwood. I used regular Pothos, Monstera adansonii, Syngonium variegated and a Bromeliad. The roots of all these plants except the Bromeliad will be in water and is expected to grow well. The Bromeliad is an epiphytic plant and its base was wrapped in moss and mounted on the driftwood with a cable tie. It would however need to be sprayed with water on a regular basis to keep it hydrated. I also placed a pot of Dwarf Papyrus at the back behind the Bromeliad to add more texture to the overall design. The pump was installed in the vault and turned on. The compartment was covered with a wad of filter floss to keep debris out of the vault. The waterfall was adjusted for desired flow. Next some Christmas moss was placed along the waterfall outlet area in the cracks and crevices of the wood and rocks. Salvinia floaters were added on the water surface. Nexy I installed a mist maker at the back and turned it on. As the mist started flowing the final design came to life. I think it has come together very well. I also hope to add a couple of guppies and some snails to this mini pond in a couple of weeks. And I might add a sponge filter in future to help with basic filtration.
