In 1968, The Yardbirds were in a period of transition and instability, which eventually led to the band’s dissolution. During this time, they began working on an album that was never completed, leaving behind a series of recordings that, although unfinished, are a fascinating piece of the band’s legacy and rock history.
These recording sessions took place while the band was dealing with significant changes in its lineup. After Jeff Beck’s departure in 1966, Jimmy Page took over as the lead guitarist, and his presence began steering the band’s sound towards something heavier and more experimental, foreshadowing what would become Led Zeppelin. However, tension within the band was high, and the creative environment reflected this uncertainty.
Among the tracks recorded are drafts of songs that Jimmy Page would later take to Led Zeppelin, where they would become some of the new band’s greatest successes. One of the last tracks recorded during these sessions is the embryonic version of what would become “Tangerine,“ a beautiful and introspective ballad that would eventually appear on Led Zeppelin’s third album, “Led Zeppelin III.“ It’s fascinating to hear how this song evolved from its early forms to the final version that became a classic.
Despite the potential of these sessions, the project was abandoned when The Yardbirds disbanded in mid-1968. Keith Relf and Jim McCarty, founding members, decided to go their separate ways, forming the acoustic duo Renaissance. Jimmy Page, on the other hand, recruited new musicians and formed Led Zeppelin, using some of the material from The Yardbirds sessions as a foundation for his new band’s sound.
These unfinished recordings remained obscure for many years but were eventually rediscovered and released as part of compilations and special editions, offering fans a fascinating glimpse of a band at the peak of transformation. They represent The Yardbirds’ last creative breath and the precursor to what would become one of rock’s greatest icons, Led Zeppelin.
