POV: You Attend Mozart’s Italian Tour in 1770
Between 1769 and 1773, the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his father Leopold made three trips to Italy. These tours, financed by public and private performances, were designed to showcase the young composer’s prodigious talent and establish his reputation throughout Europe.
The first tour began on 13 December 1769, when Leopold and 13-year-old Wolfgang left Salzburg, armed with credentials and letters to facilitate their journey. From there, father and son travelled to Innsbruck, then south into Italy via Bolzano and Rovereto (where Wolfgang gave a piano recital on 25 December and an organ recital on 26 December). They then moved on to Verona, where Wolfgang gave a piano recital in the Teatro Filarmonico on 5 January 1770, which was enthusiastically received by the press. In Mantua, Mozart gave a piano recital at the Philharmonic Academy, with a programme of concert arias and two of his own symphonies, designed to test his skills in performance, sight-reading and improvisation. It was one of the key moments in the young composer’s early career and, according to one press review, the audience was ’stunned’ by this ’miracle of music, an oddity of nature’.
