What happens if you dip YOUR HAND into the MOLTEN WAX???
To make casts of wax hands, you will need only a few items that can be bought inexpensively in needlework and household goods stores. Hollow wax hands are made easily and quickly; if you spend more time and effort, you can make a real candle. Since hot wax is used in the process, children can only do this under adult supervision.
Melt the wax
Observe the security measures. For an adult, this process does not pose much danger if all the instructions are followed exactly. By skipping one of the steps below, you risk starting a fire, especially if you decide to melt the wax in a saucepan directly on the fire, and not in a water bath.
If the wax does ignite, extinguish the fire with baking soda or a chemical fire extinguisher. Never extinguish burning wax with water or a water–based fire extinguisher - this will cause an explosion.
Pour some water into a large saucepan. You will need it to cover the bottom by only 5 centimeters. This will be the lower part of your water bath.
If you have a ready-made water bath (a special two-tier saucepan), pour water into its lower part and immediately proceed to actions with wax.
Put a metal stand in the pan. Find a metal cookie cutter or a jar lid and put it in water at the bottom of the pan.
Place the smaller pot in the larger one. Take an aluminum or steel saucepan of a smaller size and put it in a saucepan with water on a stand (mold or lid). Do not use other metals that can change color or react with wax, as well as non-stick pans that are very difficult to clean from wax.
Take an unnecessary pot and do not cook food in it anymore, unless you use food paraffin or beeswax. Even these safe types of wax can leave a plaque that will affect the taste of food, but it is at least harmless to health.
Crumble the wax pieces into a smaller saucepan. You can use beeswax or paraffin wax to make candles sold in craft stores, or take used candles and remove the wick. Crumble or cut the wax into small pieces so that it melts faster, and pour them into a smaller saucepan.
The wax should be enough to cover the hands completely.
Add a dye (optional). You can sharpen the lead of a colored pencil and add it to the wax for the desired color or purchase a special paint for wax and homemade candles. If you use paint, follow the instructions on the package.
It is better to avoid contact of the paint with food, even if it is marked as non-toxic. In other words, if you are tinting wax, then do not cook food in this pan anymore.
Prepare the rest of the materials. Before you start melting wax, choose one of the methods suggested below, read its description and collect everything you need. You can make wax hands of two types.
Hollow wax hands are the easiest to make, and additionally you will only need a container of water.
To make a whole wax hand that can be turned into a candle, you will need a bucket of wet sand, a pin and a wick. Read the instructions below, prepare everything you need and only then start melting the wax.
Heat and stir the wax until it completely melts. Put a water bath on the stove and heat over medium heat. Slowly and continuously stir the wax with a steel or aluminum spoon. If the wax belongs to the non-food category, do not use this spoon when cooking in the future.
This can take quite a long time, especially for large pieces of wax.
Never leave wax on the stove unattended!
Remove the pan from the heat. After removing the pan from the stove, follow one of the methods described below.
Make hollow hands out of wax
Fill the container with cool water. A bucket will do, since you need to immerse your hand in the water entirely. Fill it, but not to the end, so as not to spill the water.
To color wax hands, you can add food coloring to the water. The shade will be weak, but this is the best option if you do not want to spoil the pan with non-food paint or pencil lead.
Wait until the wax cools down. Following the instructions above, melt the wax, then let it cool. Touching hot wax can seriously burn you, so check it with a thermometer, kitchen or special for making candles. The wax should cool down to a temperature of 43 ° C or slightly lower.
If the surface of the wax hardens, heat it again so that it melts, and then let it cool again.
Smear your hand and wrist with hand lotion. Thickly smear the hand and wrist with lotion, but do not rub it. White marks should remain on the skin. So the wax cast will be easier to remove from the hand without breaking it.
Lightly moisten your hand. Dip your hand in a bucket of water up to your wrist. Shake off excess water.
