Last night I was at long last able to spend some quality time with the Tasty Chips GR-1 Granular Synthesizer, and it is pretty nifty. In this I video I demonstrate feeding it a live recording of a kalimba and manipulating those samples in real time to produce a competent (if a bit noodly) ambient track. Space music that’s perfect to study or relax to! Ha! Imagine what more competent hands could accomplish!
What you hear is 100% GR-1 (plus some of the camera audio I mixed in so as to hear the kalimba) with no external effects. The Linnstrument acts as a MIDI controller for the topmost channel.
It’s an impressive piece of hardware and quite unique--though not without its quirks. I look forward to picking it up again.
Enjoy and carpe diem!
If you liked this track, I put together an album using this pared down setup. Now available on BandCamp!
