Robert Smalls was born in Beaufort South Carolina on April 5, 1839 and on April 5, 1839 he was taken and made some random dude’s property. Oh yeah, American chattel slavery episode, you know this one’s gonna be a downer. But lo, a message from the Union! Freedom for escaped slaves! Emancipation Proclamation wasn’t a thing yet, but there was one general nearby who was hoping to enlist black men into the union army, and part of that strategy involved recruiting from the South, even as messages from Washington came in telling him to knock it off. Smalls begins to conspire with the other men on board because he sees a way to get to that union general...
