Israeli maritime police seal off coast near border with Gaza

Israeli maritime police patrolled the coast line between Israel and Gaza on Friday (October 27) after the port of Ashkelon and its oil terminal were shut in the wake of the conflict with terrorist group Hamas. Police Supreintendent Avi Sharara, who commanded the patrol off the coast of Ashkelon, said that Israel maintained the maritime closure of its southern coast which borders the Gaza Strip. He described the fighting in the area on October 7th, when Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel through land and sea, killing 1,400 people and seizing more than 200 hostages. Israel has faced heavy rocket barrages including in the south of the country, prompting the closure of the Ashkelon port, which is the nearest terminal to Gaza. Israel relies on its seaports for its trade as well as for much of its needs including consumer goods and food.
