“Illegal Migrants Are Criminal Customers“ | Ministers Fear Boat Crossings To Rise During Olympics

Ministers are concerned that small boat crossings will rise during the France Olympics, as police will be reassigned from Calais to Paris. The Home Office has urged the French government to maintain a strong police presence on the Normandy beaches to prevent illegal immigration. The UK has committed nearly £500 million to France for combating people smuggling operations. In addition, Home Secretary James Cleverly has pledged UK security service support to safeguard the Olympic Games in July and August. Despite these efforts, worries persist about police being relocated from the beaches to Paris, which is expected to host 15 million visitors. The summer months already see a spike in Channel crossings due to favorable weather conditions making the journey less perilous.
