Aleksandr Smoly also said that commanders were trying to prevent newly arrived Ukrainian soldiers from communicating with those who had been there for a long time. When newcomers arrive, the others who have already been in a position are removed, so there is no communication among them. When some of them discover the truth, they either go to the AWOL [absence without leave] or write a refusal’ he said.
