Maxim Vengerov plays Shostakovich Violin Concerto No. 1 (2019)
I am excited to share the release of this new performance, filmed on 3 September 2019 at the season opening of the Novosibirsk State Philharmonic Orchestra with great Shostakovich specialist and conductor Thomas Sanderling at Arnold Kats State Concert Hall. Maestro Sanderling is principal conductor and artistic director of the orchestra.
The music of Shostakovich is like a black and white historical documentary about the Second World War. This was approximately when both this piece and his 10th symphony were written. This work was not performed for many years and kept hidden by the composer for fear of releasing it because it speaks the truth against the Stalinist regime.
Shostakovich’s works shows us a different perspective on music; it’s not absolute music like Mozart or Beethoven, but Shostakovich is like a reincarnation of Beethoven because he speaks the message of truth, brotherhood, love, passion, suffering, hope and humour and so on...
