Apollo astronaut Thomas K. Mattingly II remembered by NASA
Astronaut Thomas K. Mattingly II passed away on Oct. 31, 2023. He was the “command module pilot for Apollo 16 and spacecraft commander for space shuttle missions STS-4 and STS 51,“ according to NASA,
He was also originally part of the Apollo 13 crew but replaced due to an exposure to rubella. He was instrumental getting the crew home after their spacecraft was damaged en route to the moon.
