Multi technique lick - string skipping, sweep/economy picking, legato (with tab) | Licks - #13

Lick / lead sequence using multiple techniques, including string skipping, sweep/economy picking and legato. Video includes on-screen tab and a slow play-through. I don’t think there’s been much string skipping in my previous videos. The examples of it in this video aren’t particularly difficult as they’re played relatively slowly, whereas trying to alternate pick much faster across strings would be more challenging. For anyone not used to string skipping, one of the initial difficulties with it is being able to gauge how much movement is needed in the picking hand to get to a given string (assuming you’re not constantly watching that hand while playing!). It’s just one of those things that takes a bit of practice to get a feel for it. There’s a couple of pinky slides. They just need a bit of strength and coordination of the pinky. But if the skin around the finger tip is not already toughened, this sort of thing could possibly cause blisters or soreness if doing it too much. String lubricants are good for helping with that. I use one called Fast Fret, but probably there are similar products out there. Another advantage of string lubricants is that they help to be able to slide to the correct fret reliably; without it I find that the fingers/strings get sweaty during playing, then there will be variable friction along the string, and then over/under-shooting slides will start happening.
