Today I cover one of John Mayer’s lesser known songs from his lengthy career. Rumor has it that ‘Man on the Side’ was written by Mayer in his doom room during his first year at Berklee College of Music. This is a testament of the raw creativity of a young and ambitious John Mayer, whom would later attain worldwide fame for his art. Unfortunately, ‘Man on the Side’ is not officially released and does not hold a place in any of his albums. This is a pity as it is a beautiful progression that is rife with richly melancholic chord voicing’s and deserves the recognition thereof. I’ve heard it said that ‘Man of the Side’ can be deemed John Mayer’s ‘Little Wing’. A statement of which I agree wholeheartedly.
