The kori bustard is known as one of the heaviest flying birds alive today. With males reaching over fourty pounds in weight, that’s a big bird to be taking flight! Kori bustards are found in parts of Africa. They enjoy savannah regions and scrubland with sparse trees. Kori bustards prefer walking through tall grass while they hunt for food so they can keep watch for predators. Predators to kori bustards include lions, leopards, jackals, other birds of prey, and more.
Scientific Name: Ardeotis kori
Range: fragmented parts of Africa
Size: males over 40lbs (18kg) and 4 feet () tall; females about half this
Diet: insects, rodents, lizards and more as well as plants like berries and seeds
Lifespan: 25 years in captivity
