The T-62 was the first mass produced tank to use a smoothbore cannon and APFSDS, entering service in 1961. The 3BM3 Armour-Piercing Fin-Stabilised Discarding-Sabot round had exceptional muzzle velocity and penetration; its long, slender, eroding body allowed to to perforate even heavily sloped armour without ricocheting.
The Chieftain also entered service during the 1960’s, being arguably the best protected NATO tank until the composite 3rd generation NATO MBTs of the 1980’s. The Chieftain relied on sloped armour for its protection, with everything but the lower plate being impervious to most AP and APDS rounds of the era. It should be noted that this armour, like the Strv 103, was designed before APFSDS had entered service.
