This famous carol is originally an Ukrainian folksong. It was sung on the first day of the year, which used to be the first of May. This old song is called “Shchedryk“. The original, pre-Christian version may have sound like this: In 1916 the Ukrainian teacher and composer Mykola Leontovych arranged this folksong into a version for mixed Choir (SATB). Ariana Le Fay (singer and composer of DRAGONTOR) rearranged it for female choir (SSAA). The harmonisation is the same as in the version of Leontovych.
