The Ukrainian military has denied claims that Russia has captured the whole of Soledar in Donetsk, saying battles are continuing. On January 11, Russia’s Defense Ministry said that Russian paratroopers had blocked Soledar from the north and south. The Russian army said the fierce battle for Soledar is ongoing, contradicting earlier claims by Wagner Group that it had taken control of the town. The Kremlin said it was important not to “rush“ to declare victory in Soledar, urging to wait for “official announcements“. Meanwhile, Russia has sacked Sergei Surovikin as the commander of the combined forces group for the “special military operation“ in Ukraine.
