Auberge (a French word meaning “inn“) is an album by Chris Rea, released in 1991.
All paintings featured in this video are from Alan Fearnley.
Alan Fearnley is one of the World’s foremost motoring artists. His paintings have won effusive praise from critics and enthusiasts alike who appreciate his ability to create detailed and technically accurate scenes, infused with a tangible sense of atmosphere and emotion. This collection of over 75 paintings and 50 drawings, published here in book form for the first time, encompasses a variety of automotive subjects from the great Silver Arrows of the ’30s to the sports racers of the ’50s to gentler scenes spanning many contrasting decades.
Fearnley’s paintings are so much more than mere representations of automotive icons; they place each in a typical setting and evoke the romance and style of motoring and motor cars of the past. Each painting is accompanied by a commentary from the artist describing the scene, his inspiration and mode of working. Further insight into the art of Alan Fearnley is provided by current owners of his works and comments from his subjects, including the legendary, Sir Stirling Moss. Alan Fearnley’s paintings are full of atmosphere, technical skill, originality and humour.
The album as well as the title song was mostly notable for the association of the Auberge (a French word meaning “inn“) is an album by Chris Rea, released in 1991. The album as well as the title song was mostly notable for the association of the Caterham Super Seven that he owned, in which he called it the “Blue Seven“. That car appeared on the album cover, illustrated in oil by renowned motoring artist Alan Fearnley. The album makes several reference to the car over several tracks, as well on the video of the title song and its cover illustration was used for its adverts. In 2005, Rea sold his car in an auction. Auberge was a #1 album in the UK in 1991.
Chris Rea to sell his beloved “blue seven“.
Friday 30th September 2005 British Rock superstar Chris Rea HAS confirmed he will be selling ’Blue Seven’, his beloved and world famous Caterham Super Seven sports car. A successful racing driver in his own right, Rea featured Blue Seven on the cover of his multi million selling album ’Auberge’. The car will be sold with all proceeds going to the children’s charity NSPCC, a great cause and worthy of everyone’s support. The sale will be conducted by specialist international auctioneers, Coys, at an auction in London on September 29th, 2005.
Chris Rea is synonymous with historic motor sport, as a racer and as a film maker with his movie, “La Passione“. Chris Rea describes his film as “various fantasies of Italy and Ferraris set to music“ so it’s a mix of his own real passions: music, cars and Italy. To car buffs and probably Rea himself, the highlight was the recreation of the Ferrari 196 “shark nose“ driven by von ’s success started in the 1980’s, where he released eight albums. “The New Light Through Old Windows“ compilation album in 1988 brought Rea great success but his next full album was to be his major breakthrough. “The Road to Hell“ enjoyed massive success, not least of which was becoming the number one album in the UK. The follow-up album, “Auberge“ released in February 1991 went straight to Number 1 in the first week. The single of the same name reached Number 16.
The cover of the platinum selling album features Rea’s own Caterham 7, probably one of the most famous images of a Caterham and the very car which is proudly on offer today.
Lyrics:
On the hard fast train
On the road to gain
Something gets right throught to your telling bone
There’s a sudden itch
An electric twitch
Sometimes I swear this body’s got a mind of its own
This is the naked truth
This is the light
There’s only one place left to go
Auberge
You meet a silent type
On a windy trail
With a shiny cloak and an unseen silver dagger
You can talk till you ache
Give yourself one more break
You can tell by the look on his face
that it just doesn’t matter
This is the naked truth
This is the light
There’s only one place left to go
Auberge
Give me a weekend
Give me a day
Don’t like what I’m seeing though I hear what you say
Think with a dagger
And you’ll die on your knees
Begging for mercy
Singing please mister please
This is the naked truth
This is the light
There’s only one place left to go
Auberge
