Hurricane Milton strengthened into a Category 5 storm on Monday, intensifying “explosively“ as winds increased to about 90 mph in about 25 hours. The storm intensified so quickly because the waters in the Gulf of Mexico are at record temperatures. Forecasters were stunned by Milton’s acceleration. Communities near the Tampa Bay area could see storm surges of up to 15 feet, according to the hurricane center.
