On August 5, 1940, an order was given to develop an 8-wheeled armored car similar to the SdKfz 231 but with the armored body as the chassis. SdKfz 234 Puma, or the 234/2, was to have only powerful turret armed with a 50 mm KwK 39/1 L/60 tank gun mounted in the distinctive pig’s head (saukopf) mantlet. Turrets were originally designed for the Leopard tank. This was the same gun that was used in the later marks of the Panzer III.
