Chemistry experiment 50 - Underwater Explosions: Acetylene reacting with Chlorine

Acetylene gas and chlorine gas are mixed. This results in violent explosions. Chlorine gas was prepared by adding dilute hydrochloric acid to trichloroisocyanuric acid (swimming pool chlorine tablets). Acetylene gas was prepared by adding calcium carbide to water. Safety: - Explosions can be quite violent. - Chlorine gas is very toxic. - Acetylene is flammable.
