November 1942, after a long and complicated journey, fourteen French fighter pilots arrived in the USSR, a cold and very foreign country. They were responding to the call from General Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Free French Forces, to fight in the ranks of the Soviet Army against Nazi Germany, their common enemy. The Normandie Niemen Air Regiment, as it became known, flew the legendary Soviet Yak fighter planes with skill, dexterity and courage, successfully shooting down huge numbers of Nazi enemy planes. Proletarians and aristocrats, Soviet mechanics and French pilots, united by a military brotherhood, shared the daily prospect of death and fame in equal measure. They were young, and they became heroes. Only three of the pioneers returned home in 1945. The film is based on the memoirs of Roland de la Poype, a French pilot who served with the legendary Normandie Niemen Air Regiment.
