Manfred Mann’s Earth Band Visionary Mountains with Lyrics in Description

Track 5 from their sixth album released in 1975 copyright Warner Bros. Records. The album was again recorded at the Workhouse in London. It received above average reviews and was their first to include a cover of a Bruce Springsteen song. “Spirit in the Night’ was released as a single and reached No. 97 on the Billboard chart. Another version released as a non-album single the following year with Chris Thompson on lead vocals reached No. 40. The album’s title was inspired by an incident from May 19, 1942 when an ornithologist and a BBC sound engineer were in the English countryside near Surrey to record nightingales in their natural habitat. While recording the birds, one hundred and ninety-seven RAF bombers flew overhead on their way to attack Mannheim, Germany and the drone of their engines can be heard on the recording with the nightingales. Twelve aircraft would not return from the mission. The recording is included on the song “As Above So Below.” Written by Pam Nestor & Joan Armatrading and produced by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band.
