Song: Love Has A Mind Of It’s Own
Artist: Donna Summer & Matthew Ward
Album: She Works Hard For The Money
“Love Has a Mind of Its Own“ is a song from She Works Hard for the Money, the 1983 album by Donna Summer. The song was written by Summer, Bruce Sudano and Michael Omartian, and produced by Omartian. It was issued as the third and final single in December 1983 by Mercury Records from the LP, all of which became chart hits in the US.
A ballad, it is performed as a duet with gospel singer Matthew Ward. The single was released internationally in 1984, but had first been issued in this form in the US and Japan the previous year.
“Love Has a Mind of Its Own“ charted on three U.S. charts, the Billboard Hot 100 and on the US R&B song did best on the Adult Contemporary chart, where it remained on the charts for 12 weeks.
“Donna was so amazing. She was the most incredible person I ever knew on so many levels,” said her husband, Sudano, “And for me to be able to share just those special moments, where she talks about singing, or her art, or the difficulty of being a recording artist…you can see her mind working and how she interpreted things. Those are precious gems that I think will influence a lot of people for a long time.”
“She had such charisma that when she walked into a room you couldn’t deny she was somebody really special, but she was always ingratiating, generous and kind with people,” - Bruce Sudano.
Summer and Sudano were married on July 16, 1980. They have two daughters together, Brooklyn Sudano and Amanda Sudano Ramirez, along with Mimi Dohler, Donna’s daughter from a previous marriage to german actor from the german production of the musical HAIR, Helmuth Summer.
This 2023 marks what would have been Sudano and Summer’s 43rd wedding anniversary. Summer passed away from lung cancer on May, 17, 2012 in Naples, Florida. Donna’s daughter Brooklyn Sudano recently co-directed an HBO documentary on her mother’s life and legacy along with Oscar winning director Roger Ross Williams.
“She was a complex and layered woman,” said Brooklyn Sudano. “And I don’t think people realize just how much she did in terms of songwriting, stage shows, performances, artwork and all of that. So I really wanted to show people that side that my family and I understood about her.”
“She was a really funny and goofy person and was a creative in all senses of the word,” Sudano adds. The documentary is currently airing on HBO Max.
