Амариллис – это название не только известного прекрасного растения, но состояния безответной любви, культивируемое в эпоху куртуазной рыцарской поэзии. Одним из выдающихся поэтов XVI в., творчество которого проникнуто идеалами рыцарской чести, стал блистательный Торквато Тассо. В двух избранных композитором стихотворениях образ Амариллиса, становится лейтмотивом душевных переживаний. Само название «амариллис» имеет греческие корни и переводится как «сверкать». В поэмах Феокрита и эклогах римского поэта Вергилия упоминается неприступная и красивая пастушка Амариллис. Известен древнегреческий миф о том, что цветок Амариллис материализовался из крови нимфы Амариллис. Как гласит история, Амариллис влюбилась в Алтео, красивого пастуха с силой Геркулеса. К сожалению, её любовь к нему была безответной, поэтому она надеялась завоевать его сердце, подарив ему уникальный цветок. После этого Амариллис отправилась к дельфийскому оракулу, чтобы попросить совета. Следуя указаниям оракула, Амариллис на тридцать дней пришла в дом Алтео и каждую ночь пронзала свое сердце золотой стрелой.
