One of a series of short films produced in 1969 by Charles Grinker and Mert Koplin, “Which Way USA -- Black Views on Race“ provided brief portraits of many African American leaders including Martin Luther King, Cassius Clay, Malcolm X, Sidney Poitier, and others. This episode features Senator Edward William Brooke III ( 1919 – 2015). In 1966, Brooke became the first African American popularly elected to the United States Senate. As a liberal Republican, he represented Massachusetts from 1967 to 1979. Brooke co-wrote the Civil Rights Act of 1968 and later became a prominent critic of President Nixon.
