Oxford Redecoration Aka Oxford Restoration (1961)

Oxford, Oxfordshire. Panning L/S of the Oxford skyline. M/S of the church of St Mary The Virgin; C/U of architectural feature over the door of the church. Various shots of undergraduates coming out of a college and walk along the street in suits and gowns; most light cigarettes as they come out; some wear mortar boards. L/S of a church with scaffolding around the steeple; C/Us show the deterioration of the stone and brickwork; a man’s hand comes into shot and shows how easy it is to scrape away at the stone. Commentator tells us in 1957 an Historic Buildings Fund was set up to clean, restore and rebuild. Strange L/S through a garden wall archway of an old man sweeping a lawn with a broom. Various shots of men doing restoration work on an old building, probably the church we saw earlier. Nice M/S of two men, one with a pipe in mouth, the other with a cigarette in mouth, as they lift a large stone brick into position.
