Heat-resistant drone could ’map burning buildings and wildfires’ expert says

A drone that can fly into a fire could help identify anyone trapped in a burning building or a wildfire, according to its developers. The prototype, called FireDrone, was inspired by the Grenfell Tower fire in London in 2017 that killed 72 people. “I used to live close by to the tower and I used to drive by it going to work to in London. And it was really shocking to see this event and people used to ask me if I have a drone that can fly inside and I didn’t have that,“ Professor Mirko Kovac, Director of the Aerial Robotics Lab at Imperial College London and Head of the Laboratory of Sustainability Robotics at Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories of Material Science and Technology, told Reuters. Since then the team have developed FireDrone, that can fly into a fire to assess hazards and provide crucial first-hand data from danger zones to first responders.
