Skoda Superb Review & Prices
The Skoda Superb offers a compelling mix of space and affordability, and it’s nicer inside than ever, but it probably won’t be the most thrilling thing to drive
Is the Skoda Superb a good car?
The Skoda Superb is a big, practical family car, but it’s part of a dying breed, because while most other car manufacturers are switching to high-riding SUVs, the Superb’s more conventional body style makes it really stand out from the crowd.
It’s a bit like sticking with your iPod while everyone else is streaming through Spotify. Just because most others have gone in a different direction doesn’t mean there isn’t value in sticking with the left-field choice.
If you want a family car that’s not an SUV your options really are dwindling. Alongside the Superb you could consider the Peugeot 508, BMW 3 Series, or the Volkswagen Passat, though that’s now estate-only.
What the Skoda Superb has over all of those cars is immense practicality courtesy of a massive boot. At 645 litres it’s not just more spacious than the 508 and 3 Series, it also makes their estate versions look small. The Passat’s boot is a bit bigger courtesy of its estate body style, though it’s the same capacity as the Superb Estate.
The Skoda Superb still has one of the biggest boots in the business and represents fantastic value for money
The Superb hatchback is also great value, as all Skodas should be, but that’s not at the expense of quality – it’s genuinely lovely inside. Sure, the Superb isn’t quite up to the poshness of a BMW or Audi, but it’s not far off, with an upmarket design and quality materials that feel solidly put together.
You get a infotainment display in the centre of the dashboard that has crisp graphics and responds quickly to your touch. Beneath this is a trio of dials with small screens within them, and their function can be altered intuitively so you’re not fiddling with touchscreen menus to change stuff like the climate settings on the move. Smart.
The engine line-up is simple, with a petrol and a diesel engine to start the range, both making 150hp and coming with automatic gearboxes. A 193hp diesel is also available with the top two trim levels and comes with all-wheel drive.
