Typhoon Khanun has hit the southwestern islands of Japan, cutting off power to hundreds of thousands of people on the island of Okinawa. The Japan Meteorological Agency described the slow-moving typhoon as “very strong“ with maximum sustained winds of 180 kilometers per hour. The JMA reported wind gusts reaching nearly 200 kilometers per hour in some places in Okinawa.
