Finale: Allegro Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 12 in E-flat major, Op. 127, was composed between 18231 and October 1824 and published in 18261 with a dedication to Prince Galitzine. It is the first of Beethoven’s last five quartets. Fourteen years after the Eleventh Quartet, the Twelfth inaugurated the series of Beethoven’s last quartets, which are often considered the greatest works of his entire creative life. Like the Thirteenth and the Fifteenth, it was commissioned by Prince Galitzine. Its composition was contemporary with the completion of the Ninth Symphony and it was premiered on March 6, 1825 by Schuppanzigh and his quartet, without success. Like the other quartets of this
