It is the first of Beethoven’s last five quartets. Fourteen years after the Eleventh Quartet, the Twelfth inaugurated the series of Beethoven’s last quartets, which are often considered the greatest works of his entire creative life. Like the Thirteenth and the Fifteenth, it was commissioned by Prince Galitzine.
