Putin says Russia to expand defence cooperation with Kyrgyzstan in his visit

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Kyrgyzstan on Thursday for a two-day visit. It was his first foreign trip since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for him in March. At a meeting with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, Putin underscored Russia’s importance as a key trade partner and the biggest investor in the Kyrgyz economy and said the two sides would further develop cooperation. Russia expects its military and defence cooperation with Kyrgyzstan to expand, Putin said during an event to mark the 20-year anniversary of a Russian airbase near the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek, while Sadyr Japarov, said that the joint air defence system, agreed upon and ratified, would serve as an efficient tool to protect the common air space against any threats. On Friday, Putin is expected to take part in the Commonwealth of Independent States summit, which Kyrgyzstan is hosting. The leaders of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan will also attend the summit. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will skip it, as Yerevan’s relationship with Moscow has frayed amid mutual accusations.
