Jerry Silverman created American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) in 1977 with stores primarily selling outdoor merchandise, such as hiking and camping gear. The chain grew throughout the 1980s, expanding to shopping malls across the United States. Jay Schottenstein and his father, Jerome, took over the company in 1992 and transformed AEO into the quintessential American brand, focusing on casual and private label clothing. In the decades since, Jay has helped AEO become a leader in affordable apparel and a multi-brand global business that now includes American Eagle, Aerie, Todd Snyder and Unsubscribed.
Jay Schottenstein has been the Chief Executive Officer of AEO since 2014, having previously served in the role from 1992 to 2002. He has been Executive Chairman of the Board continuously since 1992.
