How to Identify a TRUE Kabbalist

How do people usually identify a great spiritual teacher or guru? Why do Kabbalists hide or conceal themselves? What is the most striking quality of the Creator? Why does the Creator hide Himself? How can we recognize or attain the hidden and concealed Creator? How can we attain the greatness of a Kabbalist? How can we truly verify if our teacher is a true Kabbalist? What is the equivalence of form? Are there any signs to know for sure that someone is a Kabbalist, meaning that a person reached the spiritual world and thus could tell me how to reach such attainment as well? Usually, gurus are eager to declare, “I am the way; follow me, and you will also reach what I have attained!” This works on us psychologically because, first of all, it seems likely that if you have attained the greatest thing possible for a human being to attain, you would probably want to tell people about it. Moreover, you may want to share with others to help them attain it. Since you have attained it yourself, you would probably be confident you can help others get to where you are. This is why many students who come to study the Wisdom of Kabbalah very reasonably want to know the teacher’s credentials. My teacher, Kabbalist Dr. Michael Laitman, when he came to the Kabbalist Rav Baruch Ashlag, asked how he would know that Rabash, Rav Baruch Ashlag, was the real thing. Here, the Kabbalist does the opposite of what would be “reasonable” for a person who attained the Creator. Rabash told my teacher, Dr. Laitman, “Go and search. You are not going to get an insurance policy from me.” A Kabbalist acts humble and says, “Look at the sources and what they say, and do not look at me.” This is because being a Kabbalist means being in equivalence with the qualities of the Creator. The most obvious quality of the Creator is that the Creator hides Himself. The greatest miracle of creation is that the Creator does absolutely everything without being noticed or revealed. If He exists at all, then He is very good at hiding. Parents know that there is a phase in the life of a baby when we can do a puppet show right in front of them, and the puppets we move in front of the baby can consume the baby’s entire peripheral vision, so they do not see daddy behind the puppets stringing them along. The Creator is stringing all of the characters in my life in front of me so that I do not look just a little to the side to reveal that He is the one pulling the strings. We might remember our father doing such a puppet show for us, but we do not actually know our father until we become fathers ourselves and do a little puppet show like that for our own children and go through all these experiences of fatherhood. It is only then that we start to really feel and understand our parents. The Creator wants the same thing from us. We also have to become like Him. This is also what a Kabbalist wants from his students, for the students to become attainers of the Creator like the Kabbalist teacher. A Kabbalist does not want his students to follow him in a guru-like fashion. This is why Kabbalists always had a tendency to hide and conceal themselves, even to students who are already following them as Kabbalists, but not to seem too great, like some great Rebbe or some guru. It is not because it is forbidden; it is because this is their strong and internal feeling of the way that it should be. They feel that they should be hidden and not worshiped. And the students, instead of looking at the teacher, should look to the upper force and try to become like the upper force. So, how can we know if our teacher is a true Kabbalist? There is a saying, “One studies where the heart desires.” We have to find that place where we feel that “this is my home, this is my place.” Then, by following all of the teacher’s advice, we will eventually become like him. Then, we will understand him and attain the Creator like him.
