Tie-dye pattern : Rainbow Ripple T-Shirt Instructions 1. The T-Shirt has been washed and soaked in soda ash (1 cup soda ash per 1 gallon of warm water) for 20 minutes then spun out in the washer so the material is damp but not dripping wet. 2. Lay the t-shirt down flat and on it’s side with the front facing up. Make sure to flatten the t-shirt and remove as many creases as possible. Next tie a piece of string to the end of a washable marker (I usually use kite string or sinew but any string will do) and draw on your design following the video instructions. 3. Pleat fold your design line and the rest of the shirt following the video instructions and secure it with rubber bands. For the ripple you will pleat fold horizontally first until the entire shirt is secure, and then pleat fold the entire horizontal shirt vertically. You will only get a few pleats and they will be large. Now secure the shirt vertically with rubber bands. Refer to the video demonstration. 4. Choose your dye colors. For my tie-dye rainbow ripple t-shirt I chose Chinese Red, Deep Orange, Bright Yellow, Lime Pop, Turquoise, and Grape. Follow mixing instructions for the specific brand of dye you are using for your project and dye your t-shirt following the video instructions. 5. Allow your project to sit undisturbed for 24 hours then rinse starting with cold water to remove the soda ash. Increase water temperature to warm/hot while squeezing the material to remove the excess dye. 6. Remove your rubber bands and open your new Tie-dye Rainbow Ripple T-Shirt! 7. Wash the t-shirt by itself with hot water (I use Synthrapol Textile Detergent) without fabric softener and hang dry for the first time. After that, wash and dry like normal. ***Before working with procion dyes or any kind of fiber reactive dye please make sure to pay special attention to all labels including directions, warnings, and first aid instructions***. I highly recommend gloves, eye protection, and a respirator or dust mask per these instructions.
