Take advantage of the shade of the flowery arbours to cool off in the middle of summer. Le Castellet and its history 20 centuries of history Several centuries before our era the region was inhabited by Celtic Ligurian tribes. From the 1st century, the Roman conquest materializes throughout the territory, especially on the heights of the region, where they establish colonies for their soldiers, and build camps that will be abandoned during the barbarian and Saracen invasions. You can see the base of a Roman mausoleum in the Château Vieux district. The first village was grouped around the castle under the reign of Pons-Mainier, Viscount of Marseille. In 1212, the Baux family acceded to the seigniory. Thus began four centuries of discord between the house of Baux and the house of Provence. In 1434, the De Castillon family became owners of the castle, and kept it for two hundred years. It was given as a dowry to the De Lombard family at the wedding of Anne De Castillon and Vincent De Lombard in 1629. Renovations were then carried out to make it habitable, and in 1680 a clock was installed on the Campanile. The De Lombard family will remain the owners until the Revolution. The Revolution marked the abolition of privileges, their symbols erased. The coats of arms and the battlements are destroyed, the seigniorial window of the church is blocked. The castle will be sold on October 20, 1797 and bought three years later by four Beaussetans who will install an oil mill, a school class and two dwellings there. In 1923, Le Castellet was on the verge of a turning point in its history. An expert, commissioned by the Mayor, proposed a development plan to make Le Castellet a tourist destination advocating tranquility and rest. Three years later, the work was completed, painters, sculptors and merchants settled within the village walls. Today, the medieval village of Le Castellet is a tourist village that has kept its charm and authenticity. The medieval castle is listed as a Historic Monument. #LeCastellet #France #Provence #travel #frenchvillage #medievalvillage #BeautifulVillage
