Size is a big factor, the tiger is a lot more cat than the lion. The tigers claws are is a huge factor too. They are the largest feline claws I have ever seen, the other factor is that tigers are more athletic than lions. They are excellent at sprinting, climbing and swimming. Too cut to the chase, they have met, but not in the wild but in captivity.
