US sending Abrams tanks because “conditions on the ground“ in Ukraine changed: Kirby

National Security Council (NSC) coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby said Wednesday that the U.S. had made the decision to send 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine because “conditions on the ground” had changed. He said the decision by the U.S. and its allies to send battle tanks would have “an effect” on Russia’s war in Ukraine. The decision by the U.S. follows Germany’s announcement it would send 14 Leopard 2 A6 tanks from its own stocks. Germany had said the battle tanks would not be sent unless the U.S. put its Abrams on the table, not wanting to incur Russia’s wrath without the U.S. similarly committing its own tanks.
