Deseret Power Railway - Electric Freight Hauler - June 2021

The Deseret Power Railway’s sole purpose is to carry coal from the Deserado Mine in Colorado to the Bonanza Power Plant in Utah. The 35 mile long railroad is an isolated line with no connections to the national rail network. What makes it unique is that it is one of the last freight hauling electric railroads left in North America. It uses E60C locomotives and electricity is provided by the power plant the railroad serves. I visited the DPR during a trip in June 2021. Unfortunately the railroad’s schedule was erratic due to track maintenance work, but I managed to catch three pass-bys. At the end of this video, I attached three unrelated clips taken during the same trip when I visited the DPR. Two show Amtrak’s California Zephyr passing through Price, Utah, and the third shows the Cemex cement train in Bell Mountain, California.
