Today, let’s try to build a sensitive metal detector with a Double D (DD, 2D) balanced coil. Can I build my own metal detector capable of finding metal objects buried deep in the ground? My first, very makeshift breadboard prototype uses an induction balance DD coil with about 15 cm (6 inch) overall diameter. It detects a small aluminium coin (18 mm diameter) at 22 cm distance and a small iron can at about 45 cm distance. Correction: the transformer primary (44t) is mH, not uH.
