Бах - Кантата “Ihr, die ihr euch von Christo nennet“ BWV 164 - John Butt - Netherlands Bach Societyъ

Suffused with orthodox seventeenth-century Lutheranism, Bach’s texts sometimes sound strange to our ears. At first sight, the words of Bach’s cantata Ihr, die ihr euch von Christo nennet, BWV 164 – recorded here for All of Bach with John Butt – don’t appear to be particularly alienating. The imagery of lyricist Salomo Franck concentrates on the heart; this corresponds well with the theme of mercy. But behind Franck’s apparently everyday imagery there lurks the rich world of seventeenth-century medical science, which Bach in turn depicts musically. Recorded for the project All of Bach on the 18th of September 2024 at the Walloon Church, Amsterdam.
