Any accounting of indie rock’s history is incomplete without assessing the sizable contribution of Modest Mouse. 1996’s “Dramamine,” built on a circular, 12-note guitar line and singer Isaac Brock’s haggard shouts, announced the band’s approach: deeply melodic, thoughtfully experimental, sonically jagged, and a bit manic. Before the turn of the century and well into the ’10s, high school teens with impeccable music taste were evangelizing Brock’s outfit. 2000’s ‘The Moon & Antarctica’ still induces waves of melancholic nostalgia for this bunch; “Float On” and “Dashboard” from 2004’s ‘Good News For People Who Like Bad News’ and 2007’s ‘We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank’ respectively, have been staples on indie playlists since their release.
