Thanks to improvements in the design of the engine, it was possible to shorten the wheelbase of the motorcycle, as well as optimize its center of gravity, which greatly improved handling and made the model competitive in a battle with the Honda CBR900 Fireblade. At that time, the Yamaha R1 model produced 150 hp of power and 108 Nm of torque with a dry mass  in 177 kg. From the very beginning, the motorcycle was equipped with an inverted-type plug (KYB) and had a proprietary EXUP system - an electronically controlled damper in the exhaust pipe, changing the cross section of the exhaust system and thereby smoothing the power output in the entire operating range.
