Johann Sebastian Bach: Suite BWV 823

Andrea De Vitis plays his own transcription of Suite BWV 823. Score: This small Suite, originally written for harpsichord, seems conceived for lute because of the thin counterpoint and the transparent musical texture; in addition the melancholic lyricism of Prelude and Sarabande (both in Rondeau form) and the simple elegance of the Gigue clearly recall the purity of the lute sound. The transcription for guitar (in the tonality of B minor instead of the original F minor) represents a compromise between the harpsichord’s polyphonic clarity and the lyrical grace of lute’s sonority.
