This adaptation of Exclusive is musically matched to the Korean version, while the spiciness is closer to the Japanese version. The project is - a more specific translation that will hopefully clarify the meaning of “exclusive“ in context - a professional proof-of-concept demo of Hypermatch* song adaptation technique - to reveal (to Taemin & SHINee’s growing international audience) the true depth of their artistry For my writing prompts, I always translate original Korean lyrics directly into Chinese and English, to capture every possible nuance lost in official English translations. I’ve adapted a dozen plus SHINee group and solo songs using this hyper-conforming technique (which I call Hypermatch*), will share with y’all in the near future. ---- Like standard adaptations, the Hypermatch* method communicates the essence and meaning of the original song. What differs: Hypermatch meticulously conforms to original song structure phrase by phrase, in exact original narrative flow. (Lyrical structure conformity is nothing new, but it’s highly challenging between languages of distant lineage). The most unique aspect of Hypermatch: respect for the original singer’s vocalization, specifically the emotional tone and energetic delivery that gave the song the X factor (the reason for adaptation). My original goal was to create seamless adaptations that can be sung WITH the original - as naturally and emotionally true as possible, in a language I speak. The bonus of this laborious songwriting technique: adaptations that capture the sonic beauty of the original vocalists (and Korean/ Japanese/ Chinese sounds), and are easy to learn, due to the seamless sync of narrative meaning and emotional flow. 제 작곡 적응 (Hypermatch) 기법의 목표는 노래의 본질과 의미를 전달하는 것입니다. 전통적인 적응 기법과 다른 점은 원곡의 구조에 맞추는 것이며, 구절 별로 원래의 이야기 흐름을 정확히 따릅니다 (구조적 순응성은 새로운 것은 아니지만, 멀리 떨어진 언어 계열 간에는 매우 도전적입니다). 이 (Hypermatch) 기법의 가장 중요한 부분은 원가수의 발성에 대한 존중입니다, 특히 노래에 X 팩터를 부여한 감정적인 톤과 에너지 넘치는 전달입니다 (이것이 바로 적응의 이유입니다). 제 원래의 목표는, 저가 말하는 언어에서 가능한 한 자연스럽게 노래를 따라 부르고 (그리고 진심으로 감정을 따라 가는) 매끄러운 적응을 만드는 것이었습니다. 이 수고스럽고 시간이 많이 소요되는 작곡 기법의 추가적인 이점은: 원가수들의 아름다운 모음 (그리고 자음) 에너지를 포착하는 적응과, 이야기의 의미와 감정적인 흐름이 매끄럽게 동기화되어 있어 쉽게 배울 수 있는 적응을 만드는 것입니다 ----- Composer/作曲: Fredrik Thomander, Dennis Mansfeld, Dani Paz Japanese Lyrics/作詞: STY Lyrics/작사: Mola, 제이큐 Song meaning summary: Instant attraction, what happens during the car journey on the way to a secret rendezvous. JP lyrics: propositioning, desire to “take full possession“ KR lyrics: “destiny“ type encounter, rapid vacillation between love and lust What “way too exclusive“ meant in the original version: it’s not way too “classy“, nor a romance getting way too “constraining“, but feeling an exceptional obsessive desire to make a desired person “exclusively“ one’s own. The Japanese version is gentler in vocalization, yet sexually more direct. Korean version has stronger vocal tone, yet has an extra spiritual/ romantic dimension. Both KOR and JP versions used the term taxi; I opted to leave that out to allow for broader listener imagination. Technical blah-blahs ---- BILINGUAL“ vocal mix The vocal guide is mixed next to the original vocal - to retain original mixing style and dynamic range - original vocal needs to be present as show-of-concept demo of Hypermatch *HYPERMATCH is a term I coined for the ease of discussion, to describe a hyper-conforming adaptation technique that involves - standard song adaptation requirements (contextual translation, lyrics writing from scratch with close match of rhyming scheme) - matching multiple constraints: phrase by phrase narrative flow, syllabic, vowel, consonant, rhythmic, vocal arrangements The songs are sung, edited, rewritten more than 100 times, to capture original vocalist emotional delivery and lyrical meaning in NATURAL-SOUNDING, near-seamless EMOTIONAL SYNC. This technique has been entertained in both amateur and professional songwriting circles, but it hasn’t been attempted often enough, especially between languages of distant lineage. For about 2 years, I’ve been refining the technique, and adapted 100 K-pop, J-pop, C-pop songs using Hypermatch. I’ll be making more videos for selected adaptations as proof of concept. This passion project is exhausting technically, but my desire to communicate the vast potential of this creative possibility is strong.
