A Real Life Downton Abbey American Heiress: the 9th Countess of Sandwich

One of the larger projects we have ongoing here at Mapperton is the archiving of the memoirs of Alberta Sturges, the 9th Countess of Sandwich. Born in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, she travelled to the UK during the Gilded Age, and married George Montagu, the 9th Earl. Alberta kept everything, and there’s a lot of material to work through. We have the diaries she wrote from when she was 10, daily correspondence with her mother, archive photos, journals, and accounts of the First World War.
