This video is - a proof-of-concept English adaptation demo - a MV for a “heavenly“ piece - a more nuanced translation that will hopefully reveal (to SHINee’s growing international audience) the deeper dimensions of Taemin’s songs and artistry - a celebration of the return to limelight of an amazing world-class artist ----- Song meaning summary ----- Hypermatch* style adaptation technique, which attempts to seamlessly match original song meaning line-by-line, in exact narrative flow, that mirrors original vocalist energy. For writing prompts, I translated the original lyrics directly from Korean into Chinese and English, to capture every possible nuance that could’ve been lost in official English translations. 이 영어 번역은 원곡 가사의 감정적인 뜻을 한 줄씩 엄밀히 따라가도록 작성되어, 국제 음악 팬들이 원래의 한국어 버전에서 SHINee의 아름다운 보컬과 함께 노래를 즐길 수 있도록 특별히 제작되었습니다. 이러한 엄밀한 가사 작성 방법은 “높은 해상도 감정적 심도“의 작성 프롬프트가 필요합니다. 따라서 저는 원본 가사를 한국어에서 직접 중국어와 영어로 번역하여, 공식 영어 번역에서 종종 누락되는 모든 뉘앙스를 포착할 수 있도록 노력했습니다. IDENTITY Composed by Steven Lee Lyrics by Jo Yoonkyung Identity is about the pain of forced separation, and having faith in a loving light that brightened up his spirit through trials and tribulation, and will continue to keep him afloat through (anticipated) dark nights of the soul. Identity first existed as an outro in Want extended play EP 2019. Lyrics were added later on, possibly at the request of Shawols. I’ve adapted the whole Identity, but included just the chorus part in this edit. The overtone is at once earnest, sensuous, restrained yet untamed, wistful yet hopeful. ------ I’ve adapted a dozen plus SHINee group and solo songs using this hyper-conforming technique (which I call Hypermatch), will share with y’all in the near future. 💝 Writing this form of hyper-conforming adaptation lyrics is super, super time-consuming, but I’m emotionally satisfied by being able to sing along in full emotional sync with the original vocalists. I believe many international fans who don’t have the time to learn Korean would still yearn for deeper emotional connection with the songs of their favorite artists. So do share the joy with everyone who wants to sing and vibe along with these beautiful Korean voices!💝 💝하이퍼-컨포밍적인 적응형 가사를 작성하는 것은 매우 시간이 많이 소요되지만, 원래 가수와 완벽하게 감정적으로 동기화되어 노래할 수 있는 기쁨으로 감정적으로 만족합니다. 한국어를 배울 시간이 없는 많은 국제 팬들도 자신이 좋아하는 아티스트의 노래에 대한 보다 깊은 감정적 연결을 갈망할 것이라 믿으므로, 아름다운 한국어 목소리와 함께 노래하고 분위기를 느끼고 싶어하는 모든 이들과 이 기쁨을 공유해주세요!💝 Technical blah-blahs ---- Notes on the bilingual vocal mix 2 main reasons why the vocal guide is mixed next to the original vocal: - to retain original mix balance: even with good AI-extracted stems, original audio dynamics will still be lost in a non-official instrumental track - original vocal needs to be present as show-of-concept demo of Hypermatch adaptation technique *HYPERMATCH is a term I coined for the ease of discussion, to describe a hyper-conforming-to-original-song kind of adaptation technique, that aims to preserve multiple original song elements, with seamlessly matched and synced narrative flow, meaning, emotional energy, and vocal style, for for the purpose of singing alongside a vocal-driven song in a different language. Hypermatch adaptation involves - standard song adaptation requirements (contextual translation, lyrics writing from scratch with close match of rhyming scheme) and on top of that: - multiple conform-to-original constraints: line-by-line narrative flow match, syllabic match, vowel match, consonant match, and vocal arrangements match, with the purpose of capturing the original emotional energy AND vocal arrangement, so that it feels natural and “flowy“ to sing along in a new language to the original language. This technique has been entertained in both amateur and professional songwriting circles, but it hasn’t been attempted often enough. For over a year, I have refined the hypermatch technique, and adapted close to a hundred K-pop, J-pop, C-pop songs using this technique. I’ll be making more videos for selected adaptations as proof of concept. Making demo FMV using unofficial AV files is exhausting, but my desire to communicate the vast potential of this creative possibility is strong. Hope my sincerity can be felt!
