Aqua - Cartoon Heroes | Live at TMF Awards | The Music Factory
Aqua performing ’’Cartoon Heroes’’ at the TMF Awards. Aqua, comprised of vocalist Lene G. Nystrøm (born October 2, 1973, Tønsberg, Norway), singer René Dif (born October 17, 1967, Copenhagen), Claus Norréen (born June 5, 1970), and Søren Rasted (born June 13, 1969), was formed in 1994. Initially finding success primarily in their home country of Denmark, the group achieved international fame in 1997 with the release of the hit single “Barbie Girl,“ which topped charts in numerous countries, including a number 1 spot in the Netherlands’ Top 40 and reaching number 2 in the Mega Top 100. Subsequent hits such as “Doctor Jones,“ the ballad “Turn Back Time,“ and “My Oh My“ further solidified their global popularity.
Aqua stood out with the juxtaposition of Nystrøm’s childlike voice alongside Dif’s exaggerated masculine vocals. The success of Aqua inspired other (Danish) groups in the late ’90s to adopt a similar concept, including Toy Box and Cartoons, although none achieved the same level of success as Aqua. The group announced their breakup in 2001.
In 2002, Aqua faced a legal challenge from toy manufacturer Mattel, who claimed that the song “Barbie Girl“ infringed on the copyright of the Barbie doll. However, a U.S. court rejected Mattel’s lawsuit.
Aqua reunited in 2007 for a series of concerts, and in 2009, they released a new single titled “Back to the 80’s.“ Later, the group returned to the top 5 in Denmark with their latest hit, “Mamma Said,“ adopting a completely different sound characterized by dark electropop elements.
